A carjacking Sunday afternoon at about 4:10 p.m. on Ramon Road east of Thousand Palms Canyon Road has sheriff's deputies looking for a duo who took off with a 1993 Acura with Arizona plates and a man's wallet.
According to a news release from the Palm Desert sheriff's station, on Sunday at about 4:20, Riverside County Sheriff'sDeputies responded to the Red Roof Inn in Thousand Palms to a report of a carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon.
Sheriff's deputies said that the victim reported that an unknown Hispanic male adult with a shaved head and numerous tattoos in his 40's, along with a white female adult with blond hair in her 30's to 40's, asked him for a ride to an unknown area off Washington Street.
The victim agreed and gave the two suspects a ride, traveling east on Ramon Road toward Washington Street, sheriff's deputies said in the release.
After they traveled east of Thousand Palms Canyon Rd. the male produced a weapon and demanded the vehicle. The victim stopped the car, gave the suspects his wallet with an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot.
The suspects then traveled north on Thousand Palms Canyon Rd. in the stolen vehicle.
The stolen vehicle was described as a green 1993 Acura Integra 2-door with white wheels and an Arizona license plate of 356WGX.
Wednesday Rico Latrell Burnett was convicted by a Hampton jury of Attempted Capital Murder and other related charges in the 2005 shooting of a Virginia State Trooper.
It started back on July 1 of last year. at 12:44 a.m. Trooper R.S. Bowers, Jr. clocked a 1995 Acura Legend, traveling 79 miles per hour in a posted 45 mile per hour speed zone.
When the trooper turned on his lights and siren, the driver of the speeding vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed, attempting to elude the trooper.
After a short pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway and crashed into a residence in the 1400 block of Big Bethel Road . The driver then exited his vehicle and fled on foot.
Trooper Bowers pursued the driver for approximately one-half mile on foot before the driver turned and started shooting at the trooper. Bowers then returned fire striking the driver. The shootout occurred in the first block of Ponderosa Drive .
Burnett, age 28, of the 100 block of Seminary Ridge in Hampton , was shot twice by the trooper. Burnett received wounds to the abdomen and shoulder. Trooper Bowers, who was wearing a ballistic vest was struck in his shoulder, above the vest, and in his leg.
Trooper Bowers and Burnett were both transported to Riverside Hospital in Newport News . The trial began Tuesday in Hampton Circuit Court and the jury began their deliberations Wednesday.
Burnett was convicted of attempted capital murder of a police officer, use of a firearm in the commission of attempting to commit capital murder, felony attempting to elude, felony hit and run, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.
Burnett was sentenced by the jury to 75 years in jail and will pay a $100,000 dollar fine.
